![]() You could start 1 or 2 in Fighter to pick up the proficiencies, HP, Second Wind, and Action Surge and then take 3 in Wizard for Bladesong and level 2 spells (Shadow Blade). The good thing about Echo Knight is that if you start as a fighter you get CON Saves, all the weapon and armor proficiencies (can only wear Light with Bladesong, though), a Fighting style, and better HP. Recognize when it's best to play vanilla wizard and when to play Bladesinging badass. Making your Echo take the risks really helps. Honestly, the attack by proxy is the best part of this build because although Bladesingers can off-tank, they really need to buff hard to survive melee combat. You won't have to sacrifice your safety for them either. With careful positioning of your Echo, you can get some nice Opportunity Attacks. After that you can finish up your last 2 Fighter levels before returning to Wizard.Īs for Feats? Consider Sentinel. The other viable option is to possibly start with Fighter for the CON save and then go Wizard5. Then do the 3 levels in Fighter before returning to Wizard. You'll need to go Wizard5 as fast as possible for the spells, subclass features and Extra Attack. It helps to know it gives you more tools to do what you want to do. Your campaign will reach a level where this won't be as painful as the 10-11 standard CoS level limit but those levels will be a pain to get through when you know you're sacrificing 7th and 8th level spells. The other weakness of the build is that you will have three levels that delay your casting. The good thing about your build is that you have the flexibility to change roles and slam down the aoe or control spells at need. If you're using Shadow Blade, then that's at least one 2nd level slot per combat and your concentration is monopolized, rather than spent on a control spell or a buff. Otherwise? It's a situation of competing needs. It the party can compensate, that's fine. You will be trading utility and battlefield control for damage. ![]() The hitch would be if you're the group's only caster. You won't be the hardest hitter but it will be pretty nasty and have great flexibility. It won't ruin the build but keep your bonus action as open as possible.Īs for viability? It works and it can be good. I don't want to spoil things but it is very possible your Echo will be swarmed or aoed in a number of battles. I think for a Bladesinger, if you want to take a 3rd fighter level for a subclass, either Battlemaster or Champion (when going for a crit-fisher build with Elven Accuracy that somehow ends up in a party in which no character carries a light source with them in the dark to ruin Shadow Blade's advantage in dim light or darkness) are the best choices - but take 2nd and 3rd fighter level only after you've got 3rd level spells and Extra Attack to not gimp yourself too hard.Įcho Knight might be interesting because of Unleash Incarnation with Shadow Blade, but it messes up the bonus action economy, considering that Shadow Blade, Bladesong and the Echo all are activated with a bonus action.ĭo keep in mind that the Echo is pretty fragile. Also, more importantly, Action Surge allows the casting of two leveled spells in a turn, such as two Fireballs. Action Surge scales great with the Bladesinger, who gets Extra Attack and Shadow Blade, which deals more damage than any other weapon in the game. You are greatly underselling action surge.
